Model Krysten Barnes - Photographer Ricky Davis of TRD Photography - Fuji Acros 100 Film

Film in the Studio? Finally got to try it!

Ricky Davis August 10, 2015

Film in the Studio...Finally got to try it!

My apologies in the repost of this blog. I was cleaning out some older posts that were no longer applicable and somehow today's post got deleted as well.

Recently I have started working to learn more about film photography. When I first played around with photography it was all film. I had no idea what I was doing. When I got serious about photography, I learned by shooting digital. Now I'm increasingly interested in working to learning film. It's been an interesting journey so far!

Model Krysten Barnes - Photographer Ricky Davis of TRD Photography - Fuji Acros 100 Film

A few weeks ago I was preparing to head off to Portland, OR for a couple of weeks, but I really wanted to try shooting film in studio before I left. That way when I got back, my negatives would be here and I could see how it worked. I was happy when an old friend of mine was able to work her schedule around and shoot with me a couple days before I was set to leave. Krysten and I have collaborated on some of my favorite photographs over the years.

Model Krysten Barnes - Photographer Ricky Davis of TRD Photography - Fuji Acros 100 Film

Our shoot consisted of shooting two different films, expired Fuji Acros 100 and expired Kodak Tmax400. As I had no idea how film would work with studio lighting, we tried several different looks, just to make sure we tried different things to see how it would work.

Model Krysten Barnes - Photographer Ricky Davis of TRD Photography - Fuji Acros 100 Film

The Fuji Acros 100 was my favorite film to work with that day I think. I liked the exposures on the Tmax too, but we had lighting issues where most of those ended up being scrapped. I started off shooting with high wattage constant light, and those were great! When I used my studio strobes, my shutter speed was too fast for the film to light up the whole frame.I really look forward to working on that next time.

These images haven't been edited, other than removing a few large scratches from processing. I'm really looking forward to working more with film in the studio and soon beginning to work on actual darkroom techniques and processing my own film. So stay tuned...

Model Leighann Word - TRD Photography - RAW, No Photoshop except b&w conversion

TRD Photography RAW goes Video w/Leighann Word

Ricky Davis June 12, 2015

TRD Photography RAW goes Video...

A big push that I've been working on lately is doing more raw, unedited type work. I call it TRD Photography RAW and I talked about it in a previous blog. This time I went a little further.

The other day model Leighann Word was in town after booking me for a session. After we finished it, we decided to do a raw shoot as well. Leighann took it a step further and did the raw shoot, without makeup either. ( Stay Tuned as I plan to announce a further series soon) We then decided to actually do one of the bts videos of our raw shoot. I hope you dig it.

I would love to do further raw sessions, and if you're interested in one of those, or any of my other work, feel free to contact me at trd@trdphotography.com I'd love to work with you.

Tattoo Model Raven Lee

Raven has become one of my best friends over the years. She's such a sweet, authentic person and that's pretty hard to find. This set we shot in North Georgia. The above photo I wanted to keep a real, natural feel to it. The only photoshop work done on this was adjusting the colors. No airbrushing/liquifying type stuff at all. I hope you dig it.

Faithmarks Chapter 2 Event - TRD Photography - Chattanooga, TN - Faith Based Tattoos

Faithmarks Chapter 2 - Tattoos of Faith event

Ricky Davis March 29, 2015

Faithmarks Chapter 2 - Tattoos of Faith Event held in Chattanooga, TN

When people start talking about tattoos and faith, the conversations can get sordid pretty quickly in some circles. Last fall I was approached by Anna Golladay and Carl Greene of St. Marks United Methodist Church in Chattanooga, TN. Back in 2013 they held the first Faithmarks exhibit, which served to get people talking about faith and tattoos and the stories of their faith that led to the tattoos.

Anna and Carl were looking to do a "Chapter Two" event and were interested in me doing the photography for this project. I was extremely stoked to be able to do this as I've always enjoyed shooting projects to challenge ideals, such as when I did the "Equality Series" back in 2013.

We set aside four Sundays to do the sessions, which eventually became five, over this past winter. It was such a unique experience for me personally. Folks would come in and let me see their tattoo, what it was and location, and then would share with me their story while I was brainstorming where to shoot it and what kind of perspective to put on it. The stories were very touching and inspiring.

This weekend was a blur, as yesterday I had to get up at 4am to be at the church to see the canvas for the first time, as well as get to be a part of a great  live interview with the Faithmarks team on WTVC Newschannel 9. I was nervous to see how my work flowed with the previous exhibit pieces and that was extremely important to me to keep them fluid with what was already done.

Last night we held the event and I was so pleased with the turnout. Fifty minutes into the event I was told we'd already had two hundred people come out. It was very inspiring to see people in my community come out and support this. I saw young children standing in front of my photographs just staring intently, while moments before they were running around playing. I saw elderly people looking at the photographs and reading the stories while wiping away tears. I had people thanking me for both how I shot these photos but bringing up past work that I did with the Equality Series. It was a very powerful experience for me.

Next up, the exhibit will still be at St. Marks on display for the next little bit, but then it'll be going back out on the road as a traveling art show. Last year it traveled across the country to different festivals and churches that wanted to use it as a talking point. This year, I'm not sure if it's been worked out logistically or not, but I know there were places overseas interested in bringing it over to show as well.

Some people don't think that tattoos and faith can mix. I'd challenge you to open up your mind, read the stories, get to know people for who they are on the inside and not what they look like on the outside. You might be pleasantly surprised not just by finding out their stories, but by the renewing of your spirit as well.

Recently I was honored to be able to do some album artwork for the band, Pack of Wolves. They are based out of Chattanooga, TN and just released their sophomore album, Echo of Love. They are fronted by the dynamite, Tootsie Von Comare. She's got soul well beyond her years and they put on a great show! Their album is out now digitally and soon to be released in cd format. Here's the cd cover that I got the privilege of shooting.

Behind the Scenes at a TRD Photography Event

Ricky Davis February 27, 2015

BTS at the Feb 22nd Blowout...

On February 22nd we offered a special event at the TRD Photography studio. We'd done some renovating and decided to celebrate by offering a big discount day. We had a great day with seven ladies booking slots. It got extremely hectic and I didn't get to video as much as I had planned, but we put together some short clips as well as some of the edited images from several of the ladies to kinda give a glimpse into the day.

I wanna thank my pal, Raven Lee, for assisting me that day. She was a huge help. Raven and I have a special video project of our own that'll be debuting here in the near future. Check out some of the final product below of several of the amazing ladies I got to work with that day!

much love and thanks for all the continued support,

Coulrophobia - The Series - It's just the Beginning... Model Raven Lee - Photo TRD Photography

Coulrophobia - The Series - It's just the Beginning....

Ricky Davis February 25, 2015

Coulrophobia - The Series

What's your biggest fear? I want to introduce you to a new series I just began work on entitled "Coulrophobia - The Series"

I've always been fascinated by the fear that some people have of clowns. When I do conventions, a lot of people stop me to talk about my darker work and talk to me about their fear of clowns and such. I've contemplated doing a large scale, twisted clown series for awhile, and now that time is upon us.

"Coulrophobia" is going to be a large scale, ongoing series that will build over time. It will include models, such as the amazing Raven Lee above, but I also plan on including an anyone, any size, any age can be a part of this. I want clowns of all shapes and sizes, male and female, the like.

The wonderful, Raven Lee and I kicked off the series recently, and we've decided to announce a special one day event as well. I've never offered a "dark art" specially priced event before but it's been asked for, for years. So if you'd like to get your photos taken with me check this out. On March 29th, Raven and I are joining together to offer a dark art photoshoot, Coulrophobia style. The cost is $75, which gets you makeup provided by Raven, we will be getting wigs and some costumes and props, if you want to create your own clown character, that's perfectly acceptable too, you'll get 2 fully edited photos from the shoot, AND a free 8x10 of your favorite clown photo.  This is a specially priced, one day event. Slots have already started to fill up. You can reach me at trd@trdphotography.com for more details or to book.

Model Raven Lee from the Hotel Series by TRD Photography - Photo of the Day 2/19/2015

Throwback Thursday - Hotels Project with Raven Lee

Ricky Davis February 19, 2015

Photo of the Day - 2/19/2015 - Throwback Thursday - The Hotel Series with Raven Lee

One of my absolute favorite people in the world happens to be Ms. Raven Lee. I met her back in early 2012 and have had so many amazing, artistic shoots with this lady. She's been one of the sweetest, most genuine souls I've ever met! One thing about Raven that I've not ever seen at her level is how prepared she always is. Her specialty is really in nailing artistic shoot and she goes above and beyond in planning. I've never seen anyone else like her!

I chose this photo to share with you guys today because this one came from one of my projects! It's a project that I've not really worked on since 2013 and I'd like to get it rolling again this year. It's what I called the Hotel Project. The basis of it came from the idea of working towards a book project featuring more character driven b&w shots done at hotels. Different places with different vibes.

Even though this was one of our lesser planned out sets, it's still one of my absolute fav sets. We went for more of the old Hollywood starlet feel, with her look and with the edit.

Be sure to go check her out on Facebook below.

Be sure to stay tuned to the blog as I have a video project coming up with her VERY soon. :)

Between Two Worlds  - TRD Photography

Photo of the Day 2/16/2015

Ricky Davis February 16, 2015

Between Two Worlds

This shot came from another shoot that we were doing at the time. I love doing shoots in the water. There's just something magical with it. After we were finished doing the original shot, I asked Daniel Wilbanks, one of the hands in our other photo if I could get a capture of him reaching up once more. He obliged, and this shot was born.

Enjoy,

Ricky

Photo of the Day - 2/15/2015

Ricky Davis February 15, 2015

Photo of the Day - 2/15/2015

I debated over and over, what should I start this photo of the day deal with on my blog. I decided to start it out with one of my favorite images that brings in aspect of my faith.

I took this image at a local cemetery. I love shooting images of statues, when you look at them from different angles and perspectives, it's incredible the amount of emotion they have. This particular image grabbed my attention. This is also the first time that I've ever edited a statue type image in more of my vintage feel and worked it more to fit my vision. I really loved the results.

It's not always a popular thing to say, and sometimes I catch flak all around, but what I do as a photographer results from Faith. I mentioned it in my about me section. I'm far from perfect but my work is my calling in life. I have no doubts of this. It's one of the reasons that I think this image means so much to me.

Enjoy,

Ricky

The Times they are A-Changing

Ricky Davis February 14, 2015

They Times they are A-Changing

Sorry for the title, I happen to be a big Dylan fan and it seemed like the perfect intro for this post. Just wanted to state that the website is undergoing some changes that'll be coming to fruition in the next few days.

With the media that we are constantly bombarded with here on social media, it's easy to have sensory overload. Recently a client came into my studio for a consultation and as we were going through my albums because she wanted to see what styles I offered, I became aware that I may have way too many images in there and that it seemed to be overwhelming.

So I'm trimming my galleries down a little to a more manageable amount of material,  that will be updated more regularly. It also gives me a chance to feature my other work more frequently here on my blog. I plan to try doing a photo of the day project on here, in addition to other posts that I share as well. I hope that you guys will enjoy.

Another thing to keep an eye out for in the near future is my video work. I just started playing with video, but I absolutely love it. I'm in the planning stages on several projects in the near future that should take what I've been doing with video in a different direction.

Much love to all of you guys and gals,

Ricky

Ink Revolution - Interview with BMX pro Caleb Ruecker

Ricky Davis January 9, 2015

Ink Revolution - Issue #2 interview with BMX pro Caleb Ruecker

One of the highlights for me in 2013 while I was out in Portland, Oregon was getting to meet and work with Caleb. I met Caleb through a mutual friend, who just happens to be a killer model, Lucille Suicide. Caleb and I shot some photos and it was just great conversation. Recently Caleb has been doing some insane long exposure photos in and around Portland. You should check him out on Instagram @calebrueckersphotos  You won't be disappointed! Below is the interview that we did in Ink Revolution Magazine, issue #2.

IR: How did you get started in BMX?

Caleb: I have always had a BMX growing
up, but got really into it after I had a bad
skateboarding accident. I fell in love with
BMX and knew it was my dream, my
passion, and my life.

IR: What is your best memory from being
on the tour?

Caleb: Oh man, there are so many! I would
have to say riding for Metal Bikes and riding,
traveling, and becoming friends with all my
peers and all the dudes I looked up to when I
was just a little BMX rat. They are all amazing
memories and I wouldn’t leave any of em out.

IR: Where are some of the coolest places you
got to visit in your travels?

Caleb: Back east and Montreal for sure. I loved
New York and Boston. Fun memories for sure!
I really enjoyed just pushing through different
states with a van full of rad dudes, just seeing
different things go by.

IR: When you were out on the road, how big
were tattoos in the BMX culture?

Caleb: It definitely wasn’t. I remember seeing
a bunch of BMX dudes all bare skinned and
before you knew it they were all blasted out.
It kinda fell into the ‘thing to do’, but you
should never rush anything, especially tattooing
your whole body.

IR: I wholeheartedly agree! When did
you get your first tattoo?

Caleb: Haha. I got it when I was 14 years
old and I got it done in a Hells Angels house.

IR: That’s just what the health inspectors
like to hear. You’re working in a shop in
Portland now, right?

Caleb: Haha. Right? Yes, I work at Lady
Luck Tattoo in Portland, Oregon. I have
been a part of this tattoo shop since 2002
and I love it and everyone here.

IR: That’s awesome bro! What do you do
there?

Caleb: I run the front, aka, I’m the shop bitch.

IR: What’s one word of advice for those going
to a shop for the first time?

Caleb: Always look at the artist portfolios and
do your homework, no matter what you hear
about the artists. And don’t be afraid to ask
questions or voice concerns you may have.

IR: Great advice! What are your upcoming plans?
Any traveling?

Caleb: Yes! I plan to fill my backpack up and
grab my bike and go wherever the pavement
takes me. Not sure where yet, but thats the best
part about taking that leap and going with the wind.

IR: Sounds amazing man! We wish you all the
best on your journey!

I hope that you enjoyed checking out that interview from Ink Revolution #2 with Caleb. All photos were taken by me, TRD Photography. We'll be sharing some more interviews from Ink Revolution magazines, as well as I've got several new interviews in the works as well.

If you're interested in my work, I'm based in the Chattanooga, TN area. I am booking sessions for February and March currently. Slots are filling up fast. Check out more of my work at the links below.

George...it's me again, George....

Ricky Davis November 29, 2014

An Introduction to my pal, George....

If you've followed my work at all over the last year, you may have seen some photos of my pal George the Ventriloquist doll pop up from time to time. I just thought I'd take some time to introduce you guys to George and give you a little on his backstory.

So I met George a little over a year ago out in a Goodwill in Portland, Oregon. I saw him and he waved me on over and told me he wanted to be a star. So I said "come on." We got back out to Tennessee and he took part in the group shoot for Main Line Ink in October for his photo debut but then he just hung out for a bit. We didn't talk a whole lot for a bit.

Later in the spring I was about to do a shoot at a carnival that was passing through a small town close to my house and the model was running behind. I was hanging out shooting and I looked in my trunk, and there he was. He called me on over again and said "Dude, c'mon, it's a carnival. The pics will be epic!" So I said "let's do this thing." I decided to post some bts pics on Instagram and I asked him what his name was. I remembered an old inside joke that I had with one of my cousins when we were kids about the name George, so it didn't shock me when he said "just call me George."

We took some pretty awesome stuff and George kinda became a hit on some of my pages as well as his prints got a big reaction from the conventions I went to this year. Recently George got into a pretty epic shoot with model Raven Lee. The above shot is from that set. So just keep an eye out for George. He pokes his head out ever so often, especially on Instagram. If you come shoot with me in my studio, feel free to give him a high five or a hug. He's always poking his head around....

Thanksgiving, and a little bit of what I'm thankful for....

Ricky Davis November 27, 2014

Thanksgiving and a little bit of what I'm thankful for....

So a lot of times when November rolls around I keep seeing people's social media feeds fill up with daily posts of what they are thankful for.....for several days and then they seem to run out or forget or something. As far as I can recollect, I've not ever posted about what I'm thankful for so I decided to drop that today for something to blog about.

Everyone always says that they are thankful for family and friends, etc. I am too but I want to go a little deeper on the subject of friends.

I'm really thankful for my career, and beyond the fact that I love that I get to be creative and stuff like that, what I'm really stoked about is the friendships that I have made doing whatever it is that I do. I started shooting professionally back in 2009 and I'm blessed to count so many of those that I began working with back then still as good friends. Many of them have quit modeling, some have moved to other states but it's awesome to still get to see them as I do.

The way that I work, I've gotten to know so many amazing people. There's no way that I can share all the stories, or mention everyone by name, heck I couldn't even fit everyone on the collage that I made for this post. I just wanted to drop a message to thank you all for your friendship. I'm thankful for each and everyone of you guys. Some of you guys we don't get to see each other as often as I'd like, but I think about you guys often and love all the work we've gotten to create over the years. I hope that you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving! I did want to drop a few lines to a few of you guys specifically though.
